SCHWEITZER ALBERT (1875-1965)

L.A.S. "Albert Schweitzer", Lambaréné-Gabon 23 February 1957, to Dr. Margrieta van der KREEK, Johannesburg| 1 page and a half in-4 (peel paper) with ink stamp Dr. Schweitzer's Hospital| in German.
Nice letter to the Director of Medical Services of Lambaréné Hospital.
He wishes for his stay in Johannesburg, and regrets that hand cramps and overworked eyes prevent him from writing as he would like. It's all right, everyone is trying to do their jobs, and that's a lot. Unfortunately Schweitzer can't give his attention to the hospital as much as he would like because he has too much work elsewhere, overseeing construction and paperwork. He leads a harassed and disturbed life, different from what he expected in his old age... He sends his regards to Dr. Penn and Dr. Cohen, and thanks Dr. Penn for his letter: he's glad Dr. Penn likes needles. She will receive a cheque in Swiss francs from Mr Dinner-Obrist in Basel, and if she needs more, let her know. He also talks about the American doctor who is working on bacteriology here: he has shown by cultures made in the leper village that certain strains found in the ulcerous lesions have become resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics....
