TWO ENLIGHTENED MANUSCRIPTS, Natural History. Zoology and
Natural History. Botany, 1849| 2 vols. in-fol., bound in half green grief, spine with nerves ornamented, with number V. D. on cover, gilt edges (contemporary binding).
Magnificent original manuscripts decorated with two illuminated titles with gold highlights and 42 paintings depicting animal and plant species.
The first volume includes: Mammals, 8 plates| Birds, 6 plates| Reptiles, 4 plates| Fish, 2 plates| Molluscs, 2 plates| Insects, 3 plates| Rayed animals, 2 plates.
Several exotic animals are depicted, including the two symbols of Australia, the Kangaroo and the Platypus.
The Botany includes 15 plates.
Dated 1849, these paintings, of great artistic quality, were executed by a young teenage girl as a college exercise, as was customary at the time in the education of large families.
Originally from Avignon, Valentine Girard du Demaine married Felix Marquis d'Espagnet in 1856.
