ADER Clément (1841-1925)

L.A.S., Paris November 27, 1898, [to Charles de FREYCINET, Minister of War]| 2 pages in-8.
Personal" letter from the "father of aviation" about his airplane project.
He asks the Minister for "an interview on the aviation affair of which you were the promoter and which has since been so unfortunately abandoned by General Billot, without any serious motive since he himself recognized the importance of the results obtained, following the report of General
Mensier, president of the Commission. It was only on the pretext that I had declared that I could not continue at my own expense that everything was lost. Fortunately, my work is still intact, and even extremely advanced. ...] Instead of seeing a future weapon of war of the most fearsome kind go off at random, perhaps turning against us, I would prefer to see it entirely in the service of my country.
If you so desire, I would be happy to be at your disposal again, and this time it would be to complete the work completely"...
