She thanked him for his "kind words and for the good memories you have kept of me while traveling throughout the world. I hope you will come and smoke this pipe with us soon". She sends him a page of her next article in the Independent Review: "It doesn't make sense, and since I only ever make long and heavy toasts, I am very embarrassed to give meaningful autographs.
I assure you that this is very difficult for the prose and prosaic writers of which I have the honour to be a part. Besides, my handwriting is not very legible| and finally, it has always seemed to me that giving a scrap of one's own scribble as a precious thing was an impertinent act of fatuity. But you are telling me that it could be useful for a good work [...] Uroutou prostrates himself before my good master.
We are still in admiration of this ingenious physiology of the savage that you and your brother improvised that evening to explain and motivate all of Ouroutou's impertinence...".
