JACOB Max (1876-1944)

L.A.S. "Max Jacob", [Saint-Benoît-sur-Loire] February 9, 1944, to Abbé Maurice MOREL| 2 pages in-4, envelope.
Long letter on Marie Laurencin, one of the very last of Max
Jacob, written fifteen days before his arrest.
He asked the abbot to go and see Marie LAURENCIN: "She is a very intelligent person and has given me proof of her goodness. She speaks to me of death and of the desire she has to be reconciled with God beforehand. She talks about a convent, a religious boarding house. It would be very bad for her. She is too fancy to enjoy herself in such an environment and would take religion in disgust. I know what it's like"... She would have to learn the catechism, read the Gospels, read the Imitation and St. Francis de Sales... He insists: "it's about saving a soul"...
Finally, he recounts the healings of a child and an old woman, saved by his prayers. "Prayers for my prisoners also seem to be working. We hope to save my sister, and not my brother, alas!"
