CHATEAUBRIAND François-René de (1768-1848)

L.A.S. "Chateaubriand", Paris 17 June 1821, [to Jean-Gabriel DENTU]| 2 pages in-4.
Interesting letter on the edition of his speech of reception at the Institute, forbidden by Napoleon.
[Jean-Gabriel Dentu (1770-1840), printer-librarian, co-founder of the monarchist newspaper Le Drapeau blanc, published Pièces intéressantes pour servir à l'histoire du XIXe siècle (1821), where Chateaubriand's forbidden speech was collected]. "I have never, Sir, published my speech at the Academy. I do not recognize any of the copies that are in the hands of the public. They have all been spread by the Buonaparte Police| they are interpolated and mutilated in a horrible way. The one inserted in the Rooms to serve the history of the 19th century is as guilty as the others. [...] I possess the original written in my own hand, scratched and lacerated by Buonaparte's hand, and when one reads this original, one can see why Buonaparte wanted to have me shot. I have not, Sir, claimed against the article of the White Flag, for I will never do anything to harm the Royalists, even when they dispose of my property without asking my permission, and when I have some right to complain....
We enclose a manuscript of the Speech that M. de Châteaubriant was to deliver at the Institute, and which was refused (cahier in-4 of 21 p.)| and a booklet, Discours de M. Chateaubriant, for his Reception at the Institute.
(Buonaparte defended its printing.) (Bruxelles, chez Weissenbruck, et Paris, chez les marchands de nouveautés, 1814| in-8).
