BRETON André (1896-1966)
L.A.S. "André Breton", Paris January 9, 1931, to collector and patron
René GAFFÉ| 1 page and a quarter in-4.
Interesting letter on the manuscripts of the Manifestes du Surréalisme.
"From Switzerland, ÉLUARD inexplicably writes to me that you are waiting for a letter from me regarding the possibilities for you to purchase the two Surrealist Manifestos. ...] Unfortunately the manuscript of the first one is in the possession of my wife [Simone Kahn], to whom I tried in vain to take it back and this in return for any compensation, but will you believe that this charming person attaches to it a value of youthful memory (this is what she did not hesitate to make me answer)! As for the second manuscript, it belongs to René CHAR who, I believe, would be willing to give it to you. If need be, I would offer to send you either a copy of the first manifesto or the manuscript of the revised text"... He is ashamed to have been so scandalously late in sending him introductory pages| he persists in struggling in painful material circumstances. "The growing hostility of certain circles in which, following ARAGON's journey, we had hoped to find moral support, hostility which is now being translated into action, is no stranger to this apparent neglect and still, the devil knows, if only that were the case. And now we must hurriedly prepare the third issue of the magazine [Surrealism in the Service of the Revolution], if we do not want to fall prey to ferocious animals...". He urged him to bring forward the deadline for the "Easter Island installment"...
