Offenbach had composed this song in June 1850 for a revival at the Comédie- Française of Alfred de MUSSET's play
Le Chandelier| it was published by Heugel in 1853. In 1861, Ludovic Halévy and Hector Crémieux conceived, based on Musset's play, a one-act comic opera libretto for Offenbach, built around the famous song. La Chanson de Fortunio was premiered at the Bouffes-Parisiens on January 5, 1861.
This album page is dated by Offenbach, under his great signature: "Wien den 13ten März 1865".
At the bottom of the page, the librettist Ludovic
HALÉVY wrote: "For legalization of the signature of Mr Offenbach Ludovic Halévy
Paris 19 April 1870".
