"Your name is the emblem of fidelity to misfortune so am I not astonished at the sentiments you keep me and which, as you say , strengthen themselves in adversity. I am sorry to hear that your health is not good, I hope it will recover. I was pleased to learn that your sons are worthy of their father and that they will serve their country with distinction ... A leaflet with the signatures of Napoleon III and the Empress Eugenie, Fontainebleau 3 July 1860 is attached.

J’ai appris avec plaisir que vos fils se montrent dignes de leur père et qu’ils serviront leur pays avec distinction »… On joint un feuillet portant les signatures de Napoléon III et de l’Impératrice Eugénie, Fontainebleau 3 juillet 1860.
