FOUCHÉ Joseph (1759-1820).
L.A.S. "Fouché", Paris 16 May [1809], to the King of Naples, Joachim
MURAT| 1 page in-fol., address with autograph countersignature
"Le ministre de la police gle de l'empereur", red wax seal broken.
Long letter on Napoleon and the dynastic deficiency that threatens
the Empire.
"The emperor left Paris on 13 April and arrived in Vienna on 10 May. I hope
that the Austrian monarchy, our enemy, will no longer be defeated and that
the victor will finally take care of building up his dynasty so that
will be safe from storms. It was when it was learned in Paris that His Majesty
had been hit by a bullet that he made a unanimous wish that
would no longer leave his capital before being able to leave children there. I have said it often
& I will not stop repeating it: the friends of the Bonaparte dynasty
will defend it with their courage and their blood, but they will make useless efforts
if we have the misfortune to lose the emperor before he gives to the world
heirs to his glory & his life"... The current situation is good:
"Russia is always in good understanding with us, and the emperor
Alexander is sincerely attached to the emperor Napoleon. Prussia
is too little in the balance to count it. Austria is in
dissolution. We are quiet inside - there is not a point
in the empire where the slightest disorder can go unpunished" . In Paris, we are
sad during the absence of the Emperor, and as for the "chronicle", it
"offers nothing remarkable. The arch-chancellor [CAMBACERÈS] is
always constant in his loves, the prince of Benevento [TALLEYRAND]
has left the baroness of Montmorency for Madame la Comtesse R. de
St Jean d'Angély"... To finish, he "begs your majesty to believe that in
no time, she will not find a more faithful & more attached servant"...
