HISTORY
Gabriel Gaspard Achille Adolphe Bernon
de Montélégier (1780-1825) combat- tit under
the orders of General Lasalle. He was appointed
lieutenant in Upper Egypt. Returned
in the regiment of the 7th Hussars, he was appointed
captain by the general-in-chief Kléber.
In connection with our drawing, Montélégier wrote
a memorable letter to the Emperor in which
he tells: "In this fight my horse was
killed under me and I received two blows of the sabre.
Sire, I asked for the reward of the brave,
the cross of honour. I was even made to hope
for advancement. I got nothing. The blood
shed for my country, the utmost devotion
absolute devotion to Your Majesty are titles that
I dare to put at your feet imploring your
profound justice."
