We thank Dr. Hans Vlieghe for confirming the attribution to Pieter van Lint.
When he became master of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1632, Pieter van Lint left Antwerp for Rome, where he worked on prestigious secular and religious commissions, such as those of Cardinal Ginnasi for the Cathedral of Ostia. There he painted a series of frescoes illustrating the legend of the History of the True Cross, and was inspired by ancient art and the Italian Renaissance. On his return to Antwerp in 1640, he continued to paint, imbued with the classical
manner and the Caravaggesque influence adopted in Italy. Among his most important patrons is King Christian IV of Denmark.
An important part of Van Lint's painted work consists of small devotional paintings destined for the Spanish market or the Spanish colonies in the Americas.
