Ornaments probably extracted from Cartas ejecutorias (Patent of nobility). Illuminated strips of parchment, mounted and glued together| very bright and fresh colours Spain, ca. 1550-1575 Mounting under glass, unframed Mounting
dimensions (without frame): 170 x 370 mm
Dummy mounting, particularly popular in the 19th century, with the use of parchment strips with illuminated scrolls and acanthus leaves, gilded and coloured on reserved or blue backgrounds with arabesque decoration in blue ink or liquid gold. The coat of arms is inscribed within oval frames decorated with leather, pink and liquid gold.
The mounting has allowed two shields to be preserved, providing elements of heraldry. The first coat of arms is that of the Dominican Order: Argent a cope Sable, Argent charged with a palm Vert and a lily proper in saltire within a coronet Or, and in chief a mullet Or. The manuscript from which these illuminated bands are extracted was certainly to be traced to the Dominicans, or at least the owners had special ties or devotion to the Order of Friars Preachers. The second coat of arms, for the time unidentified, is jaded as follows: "Quarterly, (1) Or three pots Sable, (2) Or three bends Azure, (3) Argent a double-headed eagle Sable, the eagle charged in the heart with an escutcheon (Argent on a fess Gules charged with three mullets Argent), (4) fesswise of six pieces Argent and Gules, an escutcheon Vert in saltire".
