Francesco Fontebasso was greatly influenced by the work of his predecessor Giovanni Battista Tiepolo, whose great frescoes made a great impression on the Venetian painter.
Fontebasso specialized in large decorative paintings for aristocratic churches and palaces from the 1740's. In 1761 he went to St. Petersburg to decorate the interior of the Winter Palace, whose decorations were unfortunately destroyed. It is surely from this period that this preparatory drawing dates.
