Mary, kneeling before the altar and absorbed in her prayer, is represented as she turns around, welcoming the angel Gabriel, bearer of the divine message. The richly detailed decoration of a church interior provides an intimate environment for the sacred exchange and calm serenity of the scene.
Perino del Vaga is a major figure of 16th century Italian art. Following in the footsteps of Michelangelo and Raphael, of whom he was a pupil, he infused his art with a graceful complexity and a sense of beauty inspired by classical antiquity, which made him one of the leaders of Mannerist art. Specializing in the painting of large decorative frescoes, such as in Palazzo Doria in Genoa, or for his masterpieces commissioned by Pope Paul III, who made him the official artist of the Vatican, he is today widely known for his drawings, which reveal all his art and extraordinary creativity.
