Victor-Jean Nicolle was sent to Italy by Louis XVI in order to record through the art of drawing the views of Rome, Naples, Florence and Venice. His drawings, containing a great deal of detail, immortalize ephemeral moments of reality as well as the immutable environment of these cities, several decades before the invention of photographic reportage. This drawing was part of Nicolle's album of about 240 drawings, washes, and watercolours, composed around 1818 by one of the London Colnaghi, and belonging to Jean Camille Jammes.
