I n the mid-70s, the fashion for large, powerful and gas-guzzling sports cars seems to be declining, partly due to a certain oil crisis. So manufacturers had to adapt, and Volkswagen was one of the first to propose a new sports car philosophy. A major attraction at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Golf GTI 1.6 arrives on the market with the label of «Volkswagen’s fastest ever». But the German automaker is still far from imagining that it has just uncovered the segment benchmark. Lightweight (only 810 kg) and lively with its 4-cylinder, 110-hp engine, Volkswagen is striking and gives ideas not only to the competition, but also to private tuners.Against all odds, Volkswagen France, in partnership with the German tuner Oettinger, will present a limited edition of its Golf GTI 1.6, which will be produced in 1,250 units, all dedicated to the French market. It is equipped with the Oettinger Kit No. 342, which consists of a 16-valve cylinder head and brings the engine power to 136 hp. The performance is impressive even today, as the weight of the whole unit remains under a ton. This car has known only one region, Touraine, all its life. The first owner bought the Gol
