] I accuse... ! Letter to the President of the Republic. Paris, L'Aurore, Thursday, January 13, 1898. In-plano of [1] f. under glass (
60 x 46).

Original copy of Emile Zola's famous manifesto letter addressed to the President of the Republic Félix Faure in favour of Captain Dreyfus

.

As a reminder: on 13 January 1898, Émile Zola published in the newspaper L'Aurore, founded by Clemenceau and Vaughan the previous year, an open letter to the President of the Republic, Félix Faure, with the provocative title, "J'accuse.... The "Clemenceau's choice" was displayed in large print on the front page of the newspaper. In this long and dense plea, which occupies the first two pages of the six-column diary, Zola first recalls the circumstances of the Affair, the discovery of the docket and the conviction of Dreyfus, then goes back over the revelation of Commander Esterhazy's betrayal, before denouncing his scandalous acquittal and accusing, in a series of litanies beginning with the famous "I accuse", the war ministers, staff officers and handwriting experts summoned to Esterhazy's trial of being responsible for convicting an innocent man, by acquitting a guilty one. The accuracy and reliability of Zola's information is complemented by the strength of the writer's style, making this article a literary monument. At a time when the press was becoming more and more popular, this pamphlet had a great impact on public opinion: proclaimed in the street on 13 January by the vendors of the newspaper L'Aurore, with a print run of 300,000 copies for the occasion, the cry "J'accuse" caused great excitement in the streets of Paris, while exposing its author

to an unprecedented puff of

hatred

.
