WOOLF Virginia (1882-1941).
L.A.S., London May 30, 1934, to Claire Éliane ENGEL| 1 page ¾ in-4| in English.
Letter about his father Leslie STEPHEN (1832-1904), to Mrs. Engel, historian of alpine literature, translator (in 1935) of Leslie
Stephen
's famous Playground of Europe
.
She received her inquiry about her father's mountaineering attempts, and fears that she may not be of any help. He had given up mountaineering before she was born, and whatever he talked about it, his childhood memories would be too unfaithful to be trusted. The only references to his friendship with Whymper and Freshfield can be found in Maitland's biography [Life and Letters of Leslie Stephen by Frederic William Maitland, London, 1906]. She suggests that Miss Engel should speak to her cousin, Sir H.L. Stephen, Baronet, at the Athenaeum Club| she believes he has been to the Alps with her father, and he could probably give her some information of the kind she is seeking. She knows nothing about the writing of The Playground of Europe [The Playground of Europe, London, 1871]| she assumes it was written before her father's second marriage to her mother.
