WAGNER Richard (1813-1883).
L.A.S. "Rich. Wagner", Baden 17 August 1860, to Julius RÜHLEMANN, Dresden| 3 pages in-8 (small slits in the fold), envelope| in German.
Nice letter concerning the tempi in his works, and the announcement that he can finally return to
Germany.
He responds quickly to his last friendly reports, since he has, as always, a favour to ask. In Darmstadt, he reached an agreement on The Ghost Ship (Der fliegende Holländer), and asked him to send a corrected score to the Hoftheater as soon as possible. He will authorize the payment of the copying costs to Herr Mehner upon receipt of his brief. The reference copy, annotated by himself, belongs to Wagner and not to Fischer. However, according to his agreement with H. Müller, he must also provide the latter with a copy. Therefore, this copy must be considered to be at his disposal. Isn't there another one? Anything else should be considered its own... He gives instructions for Müller to have two copies of the piano score of the opera made for the Darmstadt theatre management, to be invoiced with the usual music dealer's discount . He does not know how to satisfy the wish of the conductor Julius RIETZ, concerning tempi in Lohengrin ("Bezug auf einige tempi des Lohengrin"): Experience has shown him that no metronome can help the conductor who does not himself feel the correct tempo ("die bestimmteste Erfahrung hat mir gezeigt, dass demjenigen Dirigenten, der das richtige Tempo nicht schliesslich vo selbst fühlt, durch keinerle Metronom auch beigebracht werden kann"). The mistake is too easy, and where it is a question of being fine, nothing, outside of its own meaning, can decide. Gerechtigkeit is a hollow term| only empathy can do right, and Wagner thinks he will have to do without the empathy of conductor Rietz... Rühlemann must now know the nature of the pardon granted to Wagner: he was not granted amnesty by the Saxon government at all, but was only assured that under certain conditions he would not b
