EINSTEIN Albert (1879-1955)
L.A.S. "Dein Papa", Caputh October 8, 1932, to his son Eduard EINSTEIN| 1 page ¾ in-4 (yellowed paper, fold slit repaired)| in German.
Long letter to his youngest son Eduard dit Tetel, suffering from schizophrenia
.
That Tetel does not worry about having had to be committed for treatment ("in klösterliche Behandlung"). A friend of his in Pasadena was in such a state of depression due to pain at the beginning of the War that he had to go to a neurological hospital. When he finally recovered after a year's stay there and wanted to be released, he stayed there anyway, declaring that there was no better refuge for a knowledge worker ("kein besseres Asyl für einen geistigen Arbeiter"), and here he is to this day, in good spirits and excellent health. And first of all, Tetel must no longer worry about the matter of the will: his father will not speak about it any more, so that he may be reassured and trust him. It would be wonderful if he came to visit her before December, when Einstein travelled to California. He himself cannot leave Caputh because he needs his collaborator for important work. He hopes to take his son to America next year| this year would have been too expensive, and also too difficult, since Einstein has exhausting responsibilities in California ("weil ich in Californien austrengende Verpflichtungen habe"). But next year, he will spend five months in Princeton, near New York, a quiet and hospitable place, perfect for him. At the moment he spends his days working and sailing ("Ich verbringe meine Tage mit Arbeit und Segeln") . His son too should strive to make his life as simple and peaceful as possible. Has he read Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales? It's been so long since he's read them, he's planning to read them again. Recently he read the second part of Faust, without being as impressed by it as most people ("In der letzten Zeit hab ich den zweiten Teil vom Faust gelesen, bin aber nicht so begeistert davon wir die meisten
