CELINE LOUIS-FERDINAND (1894-1961)
La Vigne au vin, autograph manuscript S.l., 1937, 4 pages in-4 in ink. Autograph manuscript titled La Vigne au vin each page foliated from 1 to 4
.Unpublished text for the painter and friend Gen Paul who undertook to paint a large fresco for the Palais des vins de France at the Paris International Exhibition in 1937. Céline's apology on the vine, wine and the spirit of the bachique. The most surprising thing is that Celine was a convinced water drinker and denounced alcoholism.
As
a doctor, he was fighting this scourge
.
The text is not lacking in humour "This wall decoration has been designed in a cheerful optimistic spirit, in a joyful way [...] The whole work is bathed, interpreted in joy. An impassive representation would have been absolutely contrary to the very spirit of the vine." ...] "The same work conceived by a water-drinker would undoubtedly have had only sad and severe reflections, but the very author of these little paintings boasts of having always happily and copiously honoured the vine. He considers himself too happy to have been able to pay a well-deserved tribute to the source of all the courage".
