very interesting document on literary, artistic, political and social life in Brussels in the early
1890's. A

Belgian journalist, writer and art critic, Ernest Verlant became friends with young Belgian poets and participated in the adventure of La Jeune Belgique. He was a journalist at the Journal de Bruxelles and, from 1891 to 1899, bureau chief at the Ministry of Justice, before moving in 1899 to the Fine Arts Department, where his pronounced interest in art called for

him.

This diary began on February 3, 1890, and was kept until 1894. Verlant records performances (opera, theatre), conferences (which he attends, and his own lectures), exhibitions, meetings, readings, dinners and banquets, political echoes, court cases, travels, his activity as a journalist and writer, etc., inserting numerous
