These letters and manuscripts are addressed to Raymond Nyst, known as Ray NYST (1864-1943), and were intended for the preparation of a book or directory of contemporary Belgian artists in 1914, which the war prevented the art critic from completing. Most artists write an autobiographical note, with biographical information, their studies and masters, their career, a list of their main exhibitions and works (often with the name of the collector or museum), sometimes even attempting to define their
aesthetic.
