France, s.l., XVIIth c. In-8 oblong, 31 ff. (partial misnumbering) of which 29 drawings, last white sheet, text extracts in Latin, brown ink on paper. Full soft vellum with fasteners, smooth spine, paper endpapers (lack of vellum on the top cover affecting the handwritten note| parchment stains| a few faded pages, a few short trimmed drawings at the bottom, but generally in good condition). Dimensions: 210
x 165 mm.
On the cover there is the mention in ink: "This book belongs to Madelaine Paisant". Handwritten notes on ff. 6v (dated October 31, 1764), 7v and 10v. The note on fol. 6v, dated October 31, 1764, is signed "Votre tres humble et tres obeisante servante Madelaine Françoise Paisant".
There
is also mention of "Margueritte de Change de Carqué
".
The 29 beautifully crafted drawings that make up this notebook are copies from 16th and 17th century engravings. The artist chooses here to meticulously reproduce the chisel technique with its very
specific
striations
.
There are three distinct series: ff. 1-5, scenes from Genesis with Latin cartouches and frames decorated with biblical excerpts: Creation (f. 1), Adam and Eve driven out of Paradise (f. 2), Adam and Eve working after the Fall (f. 3), the murder of Abel by Cain (f. 4) and Noah's Ark (f. 5). These drawings are based on the engravings of Etienne Delaune (1518-1583) and his engravings on the theme of Genesis. Etienne Delaune was an engraver, goldsmith and designer known as Master Etienne.
