The Crainquebille Case. Paris, Edouard Pelletan, 1901. In-4, morocco parma, triple gilt fillets on covers, smooth spine decorated with gilt fillets boxes, threaded cuts, gilt headband, case edged with the same morocco, cover and spine preserved (Affolter binding).
First edition, printed in 400 copies, this one on china bearing the n°36, illustrated with 63 compositions by Steinlen engraved by Deloche, E. and F. Florian, the two Froment, Gusman, Mathieu and Perrichon
.

The publisher Edouard Pelletan's ambition was to rehabilitate the original woodcut. With this in mind, he wrote his manifesto in 1896. Among the many books he produced, two were emblematic, including the Crainquebille Affair illustrated by Steinlen. Crainquebille, a poor four-season merchant, sees his life shattered as a result of a miscarriage of justice. Friend of all the underprivileged, Steinlen is that of Crainquebille who pushes his misery into a popular Paris.
