BLAISE (Pascal)

Provincials or letters written by Louis de Montalte to a provincial of his friends & to the RRs. PP. Jesuits. Cologne, Pierre de la Vallée, 1657. Collection in-4, red Jansenist morocco, double cold fillet on covers, spine ribbed, double cold fillet for the box frames, gilt letters, gilt edges on marbling, gilt inside laces, combed endpapers (Duru binding dated 1853).
Exceptional copy with 48 added pieces
, one of the most complete.

First edition of the 18 provincial letters, initially published separately without a title, to which were added the title and a very large number of polemical pieces published on the occasion of the Provincials. The Seventeenth Letter is here in a true original edition, in 8 pages and not in 12. The title of this dummy collection is not followed by the 3 ff. of the Warning.

A

copy with many old handwritten annotations, as well as some pieces obviously in proofs with corrections by the authors

or printers.

The letters are printed one by one and clandestinely from January 1656 to May 1657. They were printed in 6000 copies each by various printers, including Pierre le Petit and Denis Langlois in Paris, and half of them were entrusted to a few rare Parisian booksellers, including Charles Savreux and Guillaume Desprez.

The

other half is distributed free of charge by the Solitaires de Port-Royal

des Champs.

The most famous of the French religious polemics, in which Jansenists confront the Faculty of Theology, the Assembly of Clergy, and the Jesuits. It was also the most dramatic because exasperated, Louis XIV decided shortly before his death to destroy this "heresy" and sacrificed the magnificent building of Port-Royal des Champs and the nuns who

lived there.
