[ALPES-MARTIMES].[NICE (Comté de)].

Indice dimostrativo di tutti i luoghi forti e campi di Saorgio, Tenda &c.
S. l. n. d., [County of Nice, first half of the 18th century]Plan on a sheet of paper folded in two, brown ink and grey wash on paper, in Italian (slight foxing does not alter the text). Dimensions: 287 x
450 mm.

Legendary map for strategic military purposes with mention of thirty-two places in the alpine communes of the county of Nice, notably Saorge and Tende. Two conflicts between Victor-Amédée II of Savoy and Louis XIV broke out in this region from 1705 to 1713 and from 1744 to 1748. The mention of Saorge Castle "already destroyed" (n°8) informs that this map was made after 1706, when Louis XIV razed it to the ground in revenge for the victory of Savoy. Also because of the mention of the French bastions, this map is therefore intended for the commanders of the Duchy of Savoy

.

Border towns long disputed by the two Mediterranean powers (parts of the county of Nice and then of the Piedmontese province of Cuneo from 1860), Saorge and Tende joined France following the Treaty of Turin in 1860.
