Ameringer Howard Yohe Gallery, New York

Work donated by Mr Yohe, a business partner of André Emmerich, to the current owner’s mother-in-law

This painting comes from the Ameringer, Yohe, McEnery gallery in New York.

The gallery has changed its name several times.
Mr James Yohe was a well-known gallery owner; he passed away in 2025. Art Price should tell you everything. James Yohe was a long-standing trusted colleague of André Emmerich, Gillian’s uncle. He joined the Ameringer Gallery as a partner when André significantly scaled back his activities.

André ‘handed over’ to him the artists he represented. Mr Yohe was, of course, familiar with them, such as Morris Louis, Hans Hoffman, Motherwell, H. Frankenthaler, etc.

For one reason or another, at some point, Mr Yohe gave Gillian’s mother, Nicole Teweles-Emmerich, the Dzubas painting as a gift for no other reason than friendship.

If you ask ChatGPT “which artists are (or were) represented by the Ameringer, Yohe gallery, you’ll find out almost everything!”.

Gillian therefore reminded me that when André passed away, the artists he represented were entrusted to James Yohe; it was only his collection of paintings at the André Emmerich Gallery that was sold at Sotheby’s—an error on my part that has now been corrected.
