Christophe Aghirre, better known as ZEVS, is a contemporary urban artist. He was born on November 17, 1977, in Saverne, eastern France. Early in his career, ZEVS enjoyed doing graffiti in metro stations or on the streets, but his style was not yet well-defined. In 1991, he narrowly escaped being hit by an RER A train called ‘ZEUS’; this incident inspired his artist name: ZEVS, pronounced ‘Zeus,’ as a tribute to the train.
Three major works have marked his career so far: ‘Visual Attacks,’ ‘Visual Kidnapping,’ and ‘Liquidated Logo.’ In 2001, he created ‘Visual Attacks,’ where he sprayed a red dot on the forehead of advertising icons. In 2004, the artist executed his ‘Visual Kidnapping’: he cut out a 15-meter-tall poster of the LAVAZZA coffee brand’s muse, located at the famous Alexanderplatz in Berlin, Germany. He then wrote ‘VISUAL KIDNAPPING PAY NOW’ and demanded a ransom of 500,000€. This muse was later exhibited at the Palais de Tokyo.
Starting in 2006, ZEVS embarked on a new project, ‘Liquidated Logos.’ The concept involves painting logos of famous brands and letting the paint drip down. In 2009, ZEVS gained attention in Hong Kong by painting the Chanel logo on an Armani store. This act resulted in two weeks of imprisonment, passport confiscation, and the requirement to erase his work. The upside? The artist received media attention all the way to France, helping to further promote his career.
Now renowned worldwide, ZEVS exhibits his works across the globe, in places like Germany, the Netherlands, New York, and Dubai, to name a few.
Aguttes' STREET ART department was founded in 2011 to meet the growing demand in the art market.
