The Taittinger house was founded in 1932 by Pierre Taittinger, an industrialist. In the early 2000s, Taittinger owned several prestigious assets, such as the Baccarat Crystal Company, the luxury hotel La Mamounia, and Taittinger Champagnes. In 2005, all shareholders of Maison Taittinger decided to sell their assets to an American fund, but this buyer did not wish to keep Champagne Taittinger. After a fierce battle against major groups like LVMH and Rothschild, Pierre Emmanuel Taittinger, the grandson of Pierre Taittinger, bought back the estate in 2006. His children, Vitalie and Clovis, soon joined him to participate in the Taittinger Champagne adventure.
Today, the Taittinger estate spans 170 hectares and consists of Pinot Noir (48%), Chardonnay (37%), and Pinot Meunier (15%) vineyards. Like many modern winemakers, Taittinger has chosen not to use herbicides, allowing nature to express itself freely. The vinification is done parcel by parcel, giving each one its own identity. The blending is conducted by the tasting committee and Pierre Emmanuel Taittinger. Once the blending is complete, the created crus are kept separately.
The Taittinger house now has 11 crus created in France: Nocturne, Nocturne Rosé, Comte de Champagne Blanc de Blancs, Comte de Champagne Rosé, Brut Millésimé, Brut Réservé, Demi-Sec, Prestige Rosé, Les Folies de la Marquetterie, Cuvée Prestige, and Prélude Grand Cru. In addition to its presence in France, Taittinger is also established in California. In partnership with local distributor Kobrand Corporation, the house developed Domaine Carneros. The wines from this estate are made using the traditional Champagne method imported directly from France. Five crus are produced there: three Champagnes (Brut, Brut Rosé, Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs) and two red wines (Avant-Garde Pinot Noir and Famous Gate Pinot Noir).
