Design
Ron Arad, an Israeli-British designer and architect, was born in 1951 in Tel Aviv. He studied at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design in Jerusalem before continuing his education in 1973 at the Architectural Association School in London. Arad became famous in the early 1970s with the creation of chairs inspired by seats from Rover cars, which he sourced from scrapyards. His early works were unique furniture pieces crafted from metal tubing, named "one-offs" for their singular character.
In 1981, he co-founded his first studio in London, One Off Ltd., followed by the creation of Ron Arad Associates in 1989, and later Ron Arad Architects. Arad is known for his unconventional approach to design, incorporating cutting-edge materials such as plastic, polished steel, and aluminum. His designs are often characterized by fluid, sinuous, elliptical, or ovoid and organic forms.
His creations range from unique pieces to limited editions, and he has designed for renowned brands such as Vitra, Kartell, Moroso, Artemide, and Alessi. Among his most famous works are the Bookworm bookshelf, the Tom Vac chair, and the Big Easy armchair. Arad's surprising and free-spirited work traverses design, architecture, and visual arts. In 2008, the Centre Pompidou presented a retrospective of his work titled "No Discipline."
