Roederer

Founded in 1776, the Champagne house Louis Roederer was originally named ‘Dubois Père & Fils.’ In 1833, Louis Roederer inherited his uncle’s Champagne house and renamed it ‘Louis Roederer’ that same year. In 1870, Louis Roederer II (son of Louis Roederer) took over the house. The brand began to gain international recognition, and three years later, a survey showed that 10% of the bottles were already being exported. In 1876, at the request of Tsar Alexander II, a prestige cuvée called ‘Cristal’ was created, exclusively for the Russian Tsars. In 1908, Roederer became the official supplier to the ‘Court of His Majesty the Emperor.’ However, between that time and 1932, the house lost some of its prestige due to events such as World War I and the Great Depression. In 1932, Camille Orly-Roederer took over the house and restored it. In 1974, 100 years after the creation of the prestigious Cristal Champagne, the house introduced Cristal Rosé. Jean-Claude Rouzaud succeeded his grandmother in 1975, becoming the first in the Roederer family to be formally trained as an oenologist. He expanded the house by trading parcels of land to achieve greater consistency in the wines. This was a successful strategy, and between the 1980s and 2000s, the house grew by acquiring other estates. Today, since 2006, Frédéric Rouzaud has been at the helm of Roederer. To this day, Louis Roederer remains one of the last independent and family-owned Champagne houses.

Roederer offers a variety of Champagnes, but the most well-known and prestigious is ‘Cristal.’ Created in 1876, Cristal takes its name from its crystal-clear bottle with a flat bottom. The classic version of Cristal Champagne is a blend of 40% Chardonnay and 60% Pinot Noir, while Cristal Rosé is a blend of 45% Chardonnay and 55% Pinot Noir. This Champagne cuvée is made only during exceptional years, aged for 6 years, and must rest for 8 months after disgorgement.

Highly prestigious, Roederer Champagnes are beloved worldwide and frequently appear at auctions. We regularly feature Roederer Champagne bottles in our auctions, so if you are an enthusiast, be sure to check them out!
