René Lalique

René Lalique is one of the foremost creators of the Art Nouveau movement. Born in 1860, he began his career as an apprentice with the renowned jeweler Louis Aucoc and studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. After further studies in London, he returned to work for the leading Parisian houses before opening his own jewelry shop in Place Vendôme.

However, Lalique did not limit himself to jewelry. His fascination with enamel, glass, and crystal led him to pioneer the concept of luxury packaging. His perfume bottles, in particular, are inventive and colorful masterpieces, embodying a refined elegance in the realm of mass production.

From this point, René Lalique achieved the unique objective of Art Nouveau: the creation of high-quality industrial art. His exceptional pieces combine aesthetic beauty with functionality, fulfilling the movement’s ideals.

The excellence of his glasswork and metalwork is evident in the innovation of style and the diversity of objects he produced. Vases, perfume bottles, clocks, and lighting fixtures (chandeliers and wall sconces) showcase his creativity in object design and demonstrate his exceptional glasswork. Techniques such as molded-pressed glass, blown-molded glass, hammered or enameled glass, and translucent or opaque cloisonné reveal his mastery and technical innovation. Auction houses worldwide highly prize Lalique’s creations.

As a master glassmaker, Lalique has an exceptional place in Aguttes’ auction sales, where he is consistently celebrated. This artist, essential to our 20th-century decorative arts sales, has already been the subject of two dedicated catalogs.
