Raden Saleh
Raden Saleh (1811–1880): The Pioneer of Indonesian Romanticism
Biography
Raden Saleh Sjarif Bastaman, known as Raden Saleh, was born in 1811 in Terbaya, near Semarang, on the northern coast of Java. A descendant of a noble Javanese family, he was exposed from an early age to both local traditions and European culture. At the age of ten, his uncle, the prefect of Semarang, sent him to Jakarta to study at a Dutch school, where he was introduced to the European community.
His artistic talent was quickly noticed by the Belgian painter Antoine Payen, who was then in Java painting landscapes for the Dutch Ministry of Colonies. Recognizing the boy’s promise, Payen took him under his wing and taught him European painting techniques.
Convinced of his student’s potential, Payen arranged for Raden Saleh to travel to the Netherlands in 1829 to pursue his studies. There, he trained under the portraitist Cornelis Kruseman and landscape painter Andreas Schelfhout, both of whom greatly influenced his technical and stylistic development. During this period, Saleh began exhibiting in The Hague and Amsterdam, earning early recognition. Deeply inspired by the Romantic movement, particularly by Eugène Delacroix, Saleh became renowned for his dramatic hunting scenes and exotic Orientalist subjects.
From 1829 to 1839, he lived in the Netherlands, receiving commissions for portraits, seascapes, and animal studies. In 1839, the Dutch government sponsored his artistic travels across Europe, where he spent several years in Germany, settling in Dresden for four years. Unlike in conservative Holland where he was regarded as a colonial curiosity Saleh found in Germany a more open, intellectual audience who viewed him as a cultivated and fascinating figure.
In 1851, he returned to the Dutch East Indies, where he became the official portrait painter of the Javanese aristocracy. His sophisticated European training and mastery of Romantic style made him the preferred painter of the elite. After a brief return to Europe between 1875 and 1878, he spent his final years in Java. Over two decades spent in Europe, Raden Saleh built an international reputation as a portraitist and painter of animals and historical scenes, earning him the title “Painter to the King of the Netherlands.”
Raden Saleh on the Art Market: Artist’s Value and Auction Estimates
Today, Raden Saleh is recognized as the founding father of modern Indonesian painting and one of the first Asian artists to achieve international acclaim in Europe.
His works often monumental in scale combine Romantic drama, emotional intensity, and a fascination with nature and power. They range from portraits of aristocrats to heroic historical compositions and spectacular animal scenes, all executed with masterful European technique and deep cultural nuance.
Because most of his works are now housed in royal collections and major museums, appearances on the market are exceptionally rare, making each sale a major event.
