Poul Kjærholm was a renowned Danish designer, celebrated for his functional and modern furniture designs. Born in northern Denmark, he studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen, where he developed his minimalist design philosophy. Kjærholm’s partnership with entrepreneur Ejvind Kold Christiansen in the early 1960s was key to his career, leading to the production of iconic furniture pieces characterized by a unique minimalist aesthetic.
In 1958, Kjærholm created the famous PK22 chair and the PK24 chaise longue for Fritz Hansen as part of the Scandinavian Forms exhibition in Paris. These pieces solidified his reputation for sleek, elegant lines and a focus on industrial materials. Unlike many of his contemporaries who favored wood, Kjærholm preferred to work with steel, which he often paired with natural materials like wood, leather, wicker, canvas, or marble.
The PK22 chair, in particular, became an icon of Scandinavian modernist design, with its refined, minimalist lines and immediate commercial success. Kjærholm was awarded the Grand Prix at the Triennale di Milano in 1957 for this creation. Today, his work is held in prestigious collections, including at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, and various institutions across Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Germany.
