Specialties
Impressionist & Modern Art
Paul-Élie Gernez, born in 1888 in Onnaing near Valenciennes to a modest farming family, studied from age 13 to 22 at the École des Beaux-Arts de Valenciennes under Fortuné Layraud (1833-1913). His admiration for northern painters, whose works he studied in museums, established his strong academic foundation.
In 1911, Gernez was appointed as a drawing instructor at a school in Honfleur, where he would spend his entire career. However, he frequently traveled to Paris, exhibiting regularly at galleries and Salons and mingling in artistic circles, where he met figures like Félix Vallotton.
Initially focused on religious themes in his youth, Gernez eventually broadened his subject matter to include landscapes, still lifes, nudes, and portraits. Prolific throughout his career, he produced thousands of works. In 1923, he was honored as a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur, and his works became highly sought after by museums worldwide. Gernez passed away in Honfleur in 1948, leaving a legacy that can be seen at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the museum in Honfleur, and in numerous other museums. His works are also popular among private collectors and art enthusiasts, achieving impressive prices at auction.
