Nguyễn Tiến Chung (1914–1976): The Poet of Vietnamese Rural Harmony

Promotion XII (1936–1941) — École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine

Biography

Born in 1914 near Hanoi, Nguyễn Tiến Chung showed a natural artistic talent from an early age. He successfully entered the École des Beaux-Arts de l’Indochine in 1936, where he studied alongside Hoàng Tích Chù, Nguyễn Văn Tỵ, and Bùi Trang Chước, graduating in 1941.

One of the most gifted students of his class, he demonstrated exceptional versatility, mastering silk painting, oil, lacquer, wood engraving, and Chinese ink. His work stood out early on for its refined composition, lyrical sensibility, and deep connection to nature.

After 1946, he became a professor at the College of Fine Arts, later teaching at the Vietnam University of Fine Arts (1955–1964). Active in cultural circles, he also served within the Vietnam Fine Arts Association from 1957.

In 2000, his legacy was officially honored when he was posthumously awarded the Hồ Chí Minh Prize for Literature and Art, one of the country’s highest distinctions.
