Marie-Gabrielle Capet is a French painter renowned for her delicate portraits and genre paintings. The daughter of a servant, she showed exceptional talent for drawing from a young age. At the age of 19, she moved to Paris to become a pupil of the famous painter Adélaïde Labille-Guiard. She quickly made a name for herself in the Parisian art scene thanks to her skills as a portraitist.

Marie-Gabrielle Capet worked mainly at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. This period was marked by the transition between Rococo and Neoclassicism, as well as by the political upheavals of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Empire. The art of this time signified a return to classical values. Although her work is primarily in the Rococo style, Capet also incorporated Neoclassical elements into her compositions, particularly in the simplicity and elegance of forms. Marie-Gabrielle Capet drew inspiration from great classical portraitists such as her mentor Adélaïde Labille-Guiard and the very famous Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun. She captured the personality and dignity of her subjects. Her portraits are intimate and detailed, akin to the work of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin. She used soft, harmonious colors, creating elegant and refined works. She is also known for her skillful use of pastels, which allowed her to create delicate textures and subtle lighting effects.

Some Works

Marie-Gabrielle Capet created a portrait of her mentor, Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, in 1785 as a tribute. She painted the friendship and camaraderie among women artists in Les Trois Amies (1797) and depicted a genre scene showing the interior of a painting studio, L'Atelier de Madame Vincent (1800), highlighting the working environment of women artists of the time.

Capet never stopped painting until her death, leaving behind a rich and varied body of work.
