Lubin Baugin was a 17th-century French painter. He trained in Paris, though his early influences are also linked to a stay in Italy, where he became familiar with the works of Renaissance and early Baroque masters. Upon returning to France, he settled in Paris and gained recognition for his still lifes and religious works.

The Rise of the Royal Academy

Baugin worked during the 17th century, a time marked by Classicism in France and Baroque influences in Italy. This period saw the establishment of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture in 1648, which aimed to set classical artistic standards in response to the more flamboyant Baroque style. Baugin joined the Académie Royale in 1651.

Blending French Tradition and Italian Influences

Baugin was deeply inspired by Italian Renaissance and early Baroque masters, especially Raphael and the Carracci. His still lifes feature meticulously rendered everyday objects, similar to the style of Flemish and Italian painters, with an impressive realism that brings clarity and simplicity to his compositions. His mastery of still life and attention to detail can be likened to the later work of Jean-Baptiste-Siméon Chardin in the 18th century. Harmonious and balanced, Baugin’s compositions reflect a Renaissance inheritance, using subtle lighting effects, reminiscent of Georges de La Tour, to impart depth and volume.

In his religious works, Baugin employed a simplicity and clarity akin to Francisco de Zurbarán, expressing the piety of the era. Although Baugin’s religious pieces may not have the grandeur of Philippe de Champaigne’s, they share a classical foundation and meticulous detail.
