Louis Valtat was a modern painter born in Dieppe on August 8, 1869. He entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1886 and also studied at the Académie Julian, where he met painters Albert André and Pierre Bonnard, with whom he became friends.

In 1890, he won the Jauvin d'Attainville prize (a competition established by the École des Beaux-Arts) and began exhibiting at the Salon des artistes indépendants in 1893. He primarily focused on landscapes, drawing inspiration from his surroundings. In Paris, he captured the lively streets, and in Arcachon, where he was recuperating in 1895, he painted maritime landscapes.

His paintings garnered attention at the 1896 Salon des Indépendants, heralding "Fauvism" with his intensified use of color. However, associating his work solely with this movement requires nuance: while he mingled with the Nabis, he was also influenced by figures like Renoir and Signac, leading to a diversified body of work.

In 1900, Valtat struck a deal with art dealer Ambroise Vollard, who subsequently acquired nearly all of his paintings. Vollard organized Valtat's first solo exhibition, and he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1905, where he was among the most notable artists alongside Henri Matisse and Albert Marquet.

His art gained official recognition in 1927 when he was named a Knight of the Legion of Honor. Today, Valtat continues to attract many collectors in the art market and at auctions.

Valtat, without aligning himself closely with any particular movement but by interacting with the leading Neo-Impressionists, Fauvists, or Nabis, played a role in the transition between Impressionism and Fauvism while exploring various emerging trends.
