Impressionist & Modern Art
Son of a perfumer who supplied King Leopold II of Belgium, Léon Spilliaert was born in 1881 in Ostend, a coastal town in Flanders. Drawn to painting, he took a few drawing classes at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Bruges but left early, becoming a self-taught artist. He joined the Belgian Symbolist movement, inspired by poets such as Émile Verhaeren and Maurice Maeterlinck, and embraced the aesthetics of painters like Fernand Khnopff, Edvard Munch, Edward Hopper, and James Ensor. By 1909, he was exhibiting frequently at the Salon des Indépendants in Paris, building a clientele. The art dealer Louis Manteau dedicated an exhibition to him at his gallery on Boulevard de Waterloo in Brussels.
Spilliaert painted or drew numerous seascapes, portraits, and self-portraits. His work, often imbued with melancholy and sometimes eerie and mysterious, reflects the anxieties of an artist who spent his nights wandering the beaches and streets of his hometown, often losing himself in the readings of Nietzsche or Edgar Allan Poe. Léon Spilliaert is now regarded as one of the major artists of Symbolism, though elements of Japonism and Expressionism can be found in the composition or brushwork of some of his paintings. His works are included in the collections of major museums worldwide. A significant retrospective was held at the Grand Palais in 1981, along with an exhibition of his self-portraits at the Musée d'Orsay in 2007. His fame and talent have led to his works achieving impressive prices at auction houses.
