Specialties
20 th Century Decorative Arts
Born in 1889, Jean Després was a key figure in the Art Deco movement. Introduced to metalwork by his father, Després began an apprenticeship with a Parisian silversmith at a young age and later took drawing classes. This training led him to connect with prominent Cubist painters of the time, notably forming a strong friendship with Georges Braque.
During World War I, Després worked in military aviation workshops, an experience that profoundly influenced his later creations. Known for his innovative approach, Després brought a fresh style to jewelry design, incorporating mechanical elements into his pieces. With designs like the “connecting rod brooch” and “cam bracelet,” he introduced an inventive universe in both form and material.
His creations include tableware, silverware, and avant-garde jewelry crafted from silver, silver-plated metal, and hammered pewter, often set with fine stones such as onyx, turquoise, and lapis lazuli. His extraordinary sense of volume and modernity solidified his place among the greatest Art Deco artists of his time. Després applied his creativity to many types of decorative objects, leaving behind a wealth of high-quality pieces that continue to enjoy success at auction.
