Old Master Paintings & Drawings
Jan Davidszoon de Heem (1606-1684) was a 17th-century Dutch painter, considered one of the greatest masters of Baroque still life. Born in Utrecht in 1606, he initially trained under his father before continuing his apprenticeship in Leiden, where he was influenced by Flemish and Dutch painters specializing in the depiction of objects and textures.
Settling in Antwerp from 1635, De Heem developed a refined and luxurious style, characterized by abundant compositions and exceptional attention to detail. His works often combine fruits, flowers, musical instruments, books, and precious objects, highlighting the richness and diversity of materials. His masterful use of light and contrasts gives his paintings a nearly tactile quality and striking realism.
Among his most famous works are Still Life with Fruits and Lobster, Garland of Flowers with a Bust, and Still Life with Books and a Golden Cup. His talent for depicting the brilliance of glass, the opacity of fabrics, and the softness of petals makes him an essential reference in still life painting.
De Heem achieved great success during his lifetime and influenced many artists, both in the Netherlands and Flanders. He spent his later years between Antwerp and Utrecht, continuing to produce works admired for their technical virtuosity and chromatic harmony.
