Henri Michaux

Henri Michaux (1899-1984) was a Franco-Belgian poet, writer, and painter, considered one of the major figures of 20th-century literature and art. Born in Namur, Belgium, on May 24, 1899, he began studying medicine but quickly abandoned it to devote himself to writing. In search of new experiences, he traveled extensively across the globe, including South America, Asia, and India, journeys that profoundly influenced his literary and visual works.

In the 1920s, Michaux settled in Paris, where he began publishing his first poetry collections. His style is characterized by introspective writing, often infused with metaphysical reflections and hallucinatory visions. Among his major works are Plume (1930), Un Barbare en Asie (1933), and La Nuit remue (1935). These texts reveal his critical view of the world and his constant quest for poetic and visual expression.

From the 1940s onward, Michaux also turned to the visual arts. His paintings and drawings, often created with Chinese ink, depict a rich inner world filled with abstract shapes and organic figures. His artistic work, influenced by his fascination with non-Western cultures and his exploration of altered states of consciousness, is considered a natural extension of his writing. Notably, he produced a series of works after experimenting with hallucinogenic substances such as mescaline, an experience he described in his book L’Infini turbulent (1957).

Michaux rejected classifications and conventions. His work, blending poetry, prose, and visual art, reflects his exploration of the boundaries of language and representation. He stood out for his refusal to adhere to dominant artistic movements and his insistence on creative freedom. His works have been exhibited in numerous galleries and institutions, and he is now regarded as an unclassifiable artist, at the crossroads of multiple disciplines.

Henri Michaux acquired French citizenship in 1955 and continued his artistic work until his death on October 19, 1984, in Paris. His legacy endures through a singular body of work that continues to captivate readers and art enthusiasts with its intensity and depth.
