Jean de Pontac acquired the noble house of Haut Brion during the 16th century. In 1549, he built the château and developed the estate. By 1649, Haut Brion wine was being served at grand dinners in England. Much more appreciated across the Channel, Jean de Pontac’s successors decided to open "Pontack’s Head," a shop in London where one could purchase wine as well as fine delicacies. This establishment quickly became a must-visit in London and played an active role in the company’s growth. In 1749, the estate was bought by the Fumel family, who continued to expand the business: exporting abroad, adding extensions to the house, creating a French-style garden and an orangery—nothing was too extravagant for the Fumel family.
In 1787, during his visit to France, Thomas Jefferson stopped by the Haut Brion estate and praised it, declaring Haut Brion wines his favorite, often serving them at grand American dinners. The late 18th century, however, was not so prosperous for the Fumel family, and the estate was purchased in 1801 by Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand Périgord.
In 1836, the estate was bought by Joseph Eugène Larrieu at an auction, and he further developed it.
In 1855, Haut Brion was presented at the World’s Fair, where it was classified as a Grand Cru. Like many Bordeaux wines, the end of the 19th century was marked by the devastation of vineyards by insects. In 1935, Clarence Dillon, an American with a deep love for France, purchased the estate. He transformed it into a military hospital during World War II. After the war, he modernized the estate—redecorating the château, installing electricity, updating the plumbing, renovating the cellar, and improving the park and gardens.
The Dillon family still owns the château today. In 1975, Joan Dillon, Clarence Dillon’s daughter, took over the business, and in 2008, Robert de Luxembourg, Joan Dillon’s son, assumed control. Haut Brion wine is made from a remarkable blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Verdot. Recently, Haut Brion wines have achieved record prices at auctions. We regularly offer Haut Brion wines for sale.
