Founded in 1792 by François Martin, the company was originally called MARTIN. His exceptional craftsmanship quickly gained recognition, and he became the official supplier to Her Royal Highness Marie-Caroline of Bourbon-Sicily, Duchess of Berry. Without a son to inherit the business, François Martin bequeathed it in 1846 to Louis-Henri Morel, one of his workers. In 1852, after Louis-Henri Morel's passing, François Goyard took over the management, having been with the company for 15 years. In 1885, Edmond Goyard succeeded François Goyard and gave the company its new name, E.GOYARD.
Edmond Goyard envisioned a bright future for E.GOYARD. He embarked on several ambitious projects, including opening an exclusive boutique, creating advertisements, and setting up sales counters in Monte Carlo, Biarritz, and Bordeaux. E.GOYARD later exhibited its products in New York and London, which were highly successful and helped grow its international clientele. The company also diversified by creating products such as accessories for dogs and cars.
In 1998, the company was acquired by Michel Signoles, a passionate enthusiast of the brand, who set out to revitalize the business. He repurchased the iconic canvas, introduced new color variations, and crafted prestigious items. Success followed! Michel Signoles expanded the brand into Asia, Europe, and the United States. Today, GOYARD is distinguished by four major themes: travel (trunks), leather goods, special orders, and pet accessories.
As the oldest trunk-maker in Paris, the GOYARD House is synonymous with history and prestige. It is an honor for us to sell GOYARD items, which are highly sought after and often achieve hammer prices well above their estimates. For example, in 2013, we auctioned a Goyard Aîné trunk estimated between 2,000 and 4,000 euros, which sold for 19,125 euros, nearly five times its estimate.
