Finn Juhl, born in Denmark in 1912, is one of the most influential figures in mid-century modern furniture design. He studied architecture at the Royal Danish Academy in Copenhagen and worked for ten years at the office of renowned modernist architect Vilhelm Lauritzen. In 1945, Juhl opened his own studio, specializing in interior decoration and furniture design. Juhl approached design with the sensibilities of a sculptor, creating innovative, organic forms that were technically ahead of their time.

Juhl's career flourished through his participation in the annual Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibitions, which promoted collaboration between young architects and traditional cabinetmakers to encourage innovation in design. His partnership with master craftsman Niels Vodder resulted in iconic pieces like the Pelican Chair and the Chieftain Chair, which were celebrated for their bold, sculptural shapes and superior craftsmanship.
