In 1946, Etienne Guigal acquired a Côte-Rôtie estate and began producing wine. He invested in the development of his land, and in 1961, his son, Marcel Guigal, took over the business. Marcel continued his father’s work, further developing the land and refining winemaking techniques.
The E. Guigal estate began to gain recognition, acquiring the Vidal Fleury estate in the 1980s, followed by Château d’Ampuis in 1995, which is now the company’s headquarters. Three years later, in 1998, Marcel’s son, Philippe, who graduated with a degree in oenology, joined the E. Guigal estate. In 2001, the estate acquired the Jean Louis Grippart and Vallouit estates, and in 2006, the Bonsérine estate. E. Guigal is primarily known for its wines from the Côte-Rôtie estate, which is divided into two sections: Côte Brune, upstream from the Reynard stream, and Côte Blonde, downstream from the Reynard stream. Four prestigious wines come from the Côte-Rôtie estate: Mouline, Turque, Landonne, and Château d’Ampuis.
The ‘Mouline’ is a wine from Côte Blonde, made from a blend of Syrah (red) and Viognier (white); the ‘Turque’ and ‘Landonne’ are wines from Côte Brune, made entirely of Syrah (red); and finally, the ‘Château d’Ampuis’ is a very prestigious wine from Côte Brune, also made from Syrah (red). Of course, E. Guigal’s wines are not limited to the Côte-Rôtie estate: the house also produces wines from Condrieu, Hermitage, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Saint-Joseph, Crozes-Hermitage, Gigondas, Tavel, and Côte du Rhône.
The E. Guigal estate cultivates its vines with respect for the environment, using chemical treatments in a measured way to protect against insects and diseases that may affect the vines. E. Guigal wines are regularly available at our Wines & Spirits auctions.
