Dominique Peccatte, born in 1810 in Mirecourt, is considered one of the legendary names in French bow-making (archèterie), alongside François-Xavier Tourte, Étienne Pajeot, and Nicolas Maire. Initially an apprentice wigmaker, Peccatte moved to Paris in 1826 to work in the workshop of the renowned luthier Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, where he learned the art of bow-making under the guidance of Jean Pierre Marie Persoit. Persoit’s influence helped shape Peccatte into one of the most highly regarded craftsmen of his time.
In 1836, Peccatte left Vuillaume’s workshop to work for François Lupot, eventually taking over Lupot’s workshop after his death in 1838. This marked the beginning of the most productive and significant period of Peccatte’s career. In 1847, Peccatte returned to his hometown of Mirecourt, where he continued making bows until his death in 1874.
Peccatte's bows are known for their square heads and finely crafted sticks, blending influences from both Persoit and Tourte. His bows are highly sought after by top musicians for their exceptional playing qualities, capable of meeting the demands of the finest soloists.
